Lead Program
New Jersey State law (Public Health
Law 1995, chapter 328), requires that children be screened
for blood lead level between the ages of 1 and 6. If a
child is reported to have a blood lead level greater than
or equal to 20 µg/dl, the Health Department will
send a public health nurse to the family to assist with
education and to ensure that the child receives medical
attention. In addition, certified inspectors will perform
a health and environmental risk assessment to identify
the cause of poisoning. Once identified, the Health Department
has the authority to require abatement of the lead hazard
to protect the child from further exposure.
