Radon
Radon is estimated to cause thousands
of cancer deaths in the United States each year. Radon
comes from the natural (radioactive) breakdown of uranium
in soil, rock, and water that gets into the air you breathe.
It can be found all over the U.S. and typically, in buildings
such as homes, offices and schools. Your risk of exposure
is easily determined by testing your home for radon, which
is inexpensive and easy. You can find radon, mitigating,
or fixing the problem simple and not too costly.
The Freehold Health Department sells
radon testing kits for $22.50. They are available throughout
the year, although we recommend that you test during the
winter months when your home is most likely to be sealed.
You may pick up the kits at anytime during normal business
hours. Please bring a check made payable to Accustar Laboratory, as the monies are sent directly
to the environmental laboratory.
If you have tested your home and are
looking for a list of state
certified contractors, the New Jersey Department of
Environmental Protection provides an updated list. If
you would like further information, the Health Department
has informational pamphlets or you may visit the following
